| I'm a Lifer! To you, a job is what pays the bills. You put in your hours, follow the rules, and then go home. Occasionally, you consider quitting, but then you think of how bad the job market is and you reconsider. Whatever happiness you get, you get from your life outside the workplace. Relationships, family, hobbies, and outside creative pursuits are what really matter to you. You're probably taking this test at work because you don't have anything better to do. | Almost everybody's on Facebook... whoever's not must be a hermit living in some cave or well, or just not tech savvy, or just can't be bothered at all. True, being on Facebook or Friendster can help people locate long-lost friends, expand and widen social networks, stay connected and in touch etc... but how many of the hundreds of friends on the list would someone actually contact and meet up on a regular basis? It is just a platform to inform people that you exist, your profile, your interests (depending on how much you reveal), and that's about it. How much more do you know about an old friend from school except that maybe he/she still looks the quite the same or very different from school days, or that he/she is married with kids cos the kid's photo is actually the profile pic? (Or how he/she is feeling that day? :p) Not very much else, I would think. Ultimately to really find out how that old friend is, what's happening in his/her life requires follow up and contact, and maybe meeting up (if it even materialises!)... otherwise just viewing an online profile doesn't really tell very much about the friend. Guess such platforms are a useful and good start to actually try to contact friends, but it requires extra effort to keep in touch after that. Online friendships are rather easy to maintain, and even essential if friends are all over the world. But for people who are working and living in this tiny island Singapore, it's ironic that many of them don't meet up as often as they would like to. Busy with work, family commitments, etc... we've heard them all and definitely used them all, and these are true and valid reasons. Of course it's more convenient and practical for many people to just send an email to update friends on their lives, especially those who are married with kids, it's quite impossible to arrange a get-together except maybe during their kids' birthday parties... so perhaps "poking" a friend, sending online gifts or playing online games are the ways people now use to keep in touch with friends, instead of the usual catching up over coffee/tea/dinner/supper... guess this is a result of much more busy, demanding schedules and lifestyles of most people, resulting in fewer personal, face-to-face meetings, reunions... welcome to the new age of faceless communication... | | |
